The Hard Truth About Lead Gen Companies

We've worked for a few major solar lead gen companies and here are some of the inside not-so-secrets that might be worth knowing about that we learned first hand and heard about 2nd hand from Lead Gen Companies:

  1. They don’t really target nor qualify the lead. Just ask if they’re a homeowner and blame the lead for being ‘stupid for opting in’ if they end up being a renter. All other qualifications, they let the solar rep deal with it and blame them for not following up properly.

  2. They advertise as wide as possible to target more people … even if it's outside the client's target area by a little. (Not that big a deal if you learn how to do sell virtual)

  3. They market to solar reps how much better XYZ platform is than the rest, then use something different or aged leads to boost the leads since it's cheaper for them to generate. Some even do 100% of the ad spend on platforms you don’t know about with questionable quality.

  4. They use "FREE" or something that will make the lead THINK it's free. Because it gets more people to click and enter their info. This just makes your job more complicated and if you complain they tell you that you don't know how to sell and overcome the objection.

  5. If they do guarantee a set number of leads, then charge more per lead or get the lowest cost / low quality leads because it’s just about the number of leads not the quality.

  6. They don’t show you the ads “because you could copy us” but in reality it’s because the ads are such low quality, say things that you’d never say and/or are fake click bait that will get you low quality leads.

  7. They don’t show the funnel because then you’d realize the leads aren’t qualified. And they’re not qualifying them in the targeting (see #1) or aren't TCPA compliant which you’re liable for if you read their contract.

  8. They share the leads when they're not supposed to. If they actually do exclusive leads and you leave, then they’ll sell your leads as aged leads.

  9. They steal the leads for themselves. Agencies let you pay for ad spend and send all or some of the leads to you and also try to sell them for their own solar co. So you paid for their solar leads. (Full disclosure: I've only heard about this and have not been able to confirm it.)

  10. If you mention canceling because they're results are terrible, they might stop the campaign and keep your unspent ad spend as well as your retainer and just send you cheap aged leads as fresh. (Again this one is hearsay so take it with a grain of salt)

How to get out of this type of contract?

Threaten legal action but use your best judgement and talk w/ a lawyer. They may let you out to avoid the hassle but they still got you by the b@lls and don't really have to budge. Worth noting is that most agencies aren't going to come after you if your card suddenly stops working. 😉

When selling you their services, they’ll lead you to think the leads are so qualified that everyone will be waiting for your call. The reality is not everyone answers. Of those that do answer, not everyone books. Of those that do book, not everyone sits. Your expectations and reality are VERY different! That's why you need a good system!!
